Initially this project was intended to be fully realized theatre production in The Theatre School’s Watts Theatre but, like so many other productions planned for 2020 that were derailed by the covid-19 pandemic, the project had to pivot. The team decided to move forward with the project as a film where we would utilize both shadow puppets and in-person filming outside. It was important to us that we maintained the sharp juxtaposition between the sterile world of court with the vibrant world of the forest. Working in a variety of mediums allowed us more flexibility with how we portrayed the two worlds, as well as gave us a chance to explore the medium of film.
I created shadow puppets based on my early costume sketches for all the characters we see in Court. I wanted to maintain the concept that everyone in court was dressed in a single color to indicate the rigidity and binary world they were made to live in. To accomplish this with shadow puppets, I incorporated lighting gels into each puppet. Each puppet started out as a sketch of mine on black paper. I used a precision knifes to cut out all the details, then scanned them into photoshop. From there I would clean up the scan and add room for movable joints in photoshop, and worked with props department at DePaul to re-print the puppets to scale using a cutting machine.
